Windrush: will Amber Rudd resign?

Windrush: will Amber Rudd resign?

The Windrush scandal dominated proceedings in Westminster today, with Home Secretary Amber Rudd coming under more pressure to resign.

Ms Moreton, who appeared in front of the Home Affairs Select Committee before Ms Rudd, later told the channel: "It's inevitable that the Home Secretary will not know the details of every single small piece of targeting, but nonetheless there are targets for removals: last year's target was 8,337 nationally".

"I look back with hindsight and I'm surprised I did not see the shape of it sooner", Rudd said.

Asked on Wednesday whether the target led to people who have a legal right to live in the United Kingdom being targeted for deportation, Rudd said: "I don't think that's got anything to do with it".

She acknowledged that she had asked for more removals of individuals with no right to be in the United Kingdom to take place, but was not familiar with suggestions that regional targets were in place.

But she admitted her department still had no idea how many migrants have been wrongly detained by immigration authorities - like the grandmother Paulette Wilson, who spent a week in detention after being told she was in Britain illegally. The problem here is that people were not properly documented'.

'I don't think that's got anything to do with it, ' she said.

The lack of knowledge of apparent regional targets for net removals prompted chair Yvette Cooper to suggest Ms Rudd may have a "lack of grip" on the system.

Long-term residents who arrived in the decades after the Second World War have had their immigration status challenged despite being in the country legally.

Do not try to hide behind civil servants when she set the policies, instilled in them the culture of disbelief and when the high commissioner told us this morning that they had warned the Foreign Office about the Windrush generation immigration problems in 2016.

BOTH Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn performed a disservice to politics with their respective antics over the Windrush scandal at Prime Minister's Questions.

Ms Rudd told MPs she "bitterly" regretted not recognising the "systemic" problem sooner.

Why, also, does the compensation offered by the aforementioned Ms Rudd only appear to extend to the cost of Windrush citizens applying to reaffirm their residency rights - and not the very obvious distress caused to them?

Elsewhere, the Home Secretary told MPs she regretted that she had not known of the problems facing the Windrush generation earlier, but that she had become aware "over the past few months".
