'A necessary step': VCU, UR athletic directors applaud college basketball reform proposals

'A necessary step': VCU, UR athletic directors applaud college basketball reform proposals

"The NCAA appreciates the thorough review and comprehensive work by the Commission on College Basketball", NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a statement.

The federal probe implicated officials at several top college basketball programs including coaching legend Rick Pitino, who was sacked as head coach of the University of Louisville.

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey said the commission "rightly focused its attention on a number of key issues affecting the sport, including agent certification and access, the one-and-done rule, grassroots basketball, and increasing the accountability applied to individuals and institutions who fail to meet the expectations for integrity in college athletics".

She wants the NCAA to take control of the mess college basketball has gotten into and the "winning at all costs" mentality.

This rule can only help the college basketball game. Moreover, the often corrupt world of non-scholastic basketball targets far more than just prospective one-and-done players.

But Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports told us: "With them (Commission) tossing around the possibility of a five-year post-season ban if you are in the Federal Bureau of Investigation complaint, and you're already coming out from under another major scandal - things are very serious for Louisville". "Those of us who have hoped for years that these two topics would become priorities owe a debt of gratitude to all who served on the Commission".

ESPN analyst Jay Bilas, a frequent critic of the NCAA, said he did not care for the "moralizing tone" of the commission clinging to the concept of amateurism and saying that a scholarship was adequate compensation for players.

The commission clearly stated it did not believe college basketball players should be paid a salary for competition.

That's because the issue is still tied up in the courts. The commission also recommended the NCAA partner with USA Basketball and the NBA to create new resources and programs for youth basketball development, which could help prevent corruption.

Notre Dame women's basketball star Arike Ogunbowale plans to compete on "Dancing with the Stars". "The fact that the NCAA Board of Governors has already endorsed the commission's recommendations shows there is a genuine appetite for change".

—If adopted, the boards will then direct the Division I Council, a group mostly composed of athletic directors, to craft legislation to implement the proposals.

If the National Basketball Association declines to act, the commission said it would reconvene and consider recommending that the NCAA make freshmen ineligible for varsity competition, a return to the 1970s that would be a non-starter with most decision-makers.

Though this is a start, it will take a while before these changes are accepted, implemented and upheld.

Earlier this year, the NCAA affirmed its decision to strip the University of Louisville of its 2013 national championship in men's basketball over the string of ethical and eligibility problems.

—The boards will convene after the presentation to consider adoption of all, parts or none of the commission's recommendations.

Haney says the NABC knew impactful change was coming and is committed to working with the NCAA to turn the recommendations into new guidelines.

Rice and the commission is recommending sweeping changes to NBA draft rules, NCAA enforcement and summer basketball.

That coaches, athletic directors and college presidents certify annually that their athletic programs comply with NCAA rules.

Create independent investigative and adjudicative body to address and resolve complex and serious cases involving NCAA violations. He said with 1,100 plus NCAA college basketball teams, making real changes is a task.

It was formed after a multiyear FBI investigation resulted in accusations of widespread bribery, wire fraud and corruption in college basketball, leading to the arrest of 10 people, including four former assistant college basketball coaches.

Adopt and enforce rigorous criteria for so-called non-scholastic basketball, such as summer recruiting events and AAU leagues.
