Hero who stopped Waffle House shooter explains how he did it

Hero who stopped Waffle House shooter explains how he did it

Another witness, Chuck Cordero, told The Tennessean newspaper he had stopped to get a cup of coffee and was outside the Waffle House when the chaos unfolded.

Four people were also wounded before the gunman fled, shedding his jacket.

Approximately two weeks later, Reinking was served papers by authorities revocating his license to own weapons.

He has been added to Tennessee's Most Wanted' list on Sunday.

Police officials issued a murder warrant for the suspect late Sunday evening, identifying him as Travis Reinking from Morton, Illinois.

Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, said at a news conference that Reinking pulled into the parking lot of a Waffle House in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville around 3:19 a.m.in a pickup truck. Shaw then wrestled the gun away, and threw it behind the counter - prompting the gunman to leave.

"The shots had stopped, so he made a decision to rush the gunman, actually wrestled that assault rifle away, tossed it over the counter and, at that point, the gunman fled", he said.

Aaron said it was unclear what Reinking was doing in Nashville or what had motivated him. Police said a shirtless man wearing trousers believed to be Reinking was spotted in nearby woods. He also complained that people were "barking like dogs" outside his residence, according to a report.

Special Agent Todd Hudson in Nashville says Travis Reinking "wanted to set up a meeting with the president". Anyone with information is asked to call police at 615-862-8600. "She was one of three seniors on her team, and she was a great role model for the other players because of her hard work and dedication to her studies and to her school". One shooting victim died at the hospital.

The victims' names were not immediately released.

According to the investigative reports in the file above, there have been numerous accounts of contact by officials with Reinking over the last two years.

The Reinking family owns a crane rental business in IL and according to the neighbors, who had not seen the suspect in months, he was brought up in a "really good Christian home".

AR-15s have been repeatedly used by mass shooters in the U.S., where the debate over gun control is fierce and gun violence is frequent. "I took the gun so I could get myself out. Then I looked back and I saw a person laying on the ground right at the entrance of the door", said Shaw, wearing a brown suit jacket and with his right forearm bandaged. Sanderlin, Waffle House employee, was fatally wounded outside the restaurant. "I'm just a regular person, and I think anybody could have did what I did if they are just pushed into that kind of cage", Shaw said as he became emotional. "There is no place for me to go".

"I distinctly remember thinking that he is going to have to work for this kill", he said. They said they named him as a suspect because the auto that the gunman arrived in was registered to him.

Authorities suspect that the gunman, who is still on the loose, may have two weapons on him: a long gun and a handgun. He had one hand on it.

A Channel 5 reporter tweeted that Shaw sustained severe burns from grabbing the hot gun. When Shaw shoved the gunman out the door, the gunman jogged away.

What was the motive for the shooting?

Cooper's statement came in the wake of a shooting at a Waffle House restaurant in Nashville. Two of Reinking's four guns are missing, police said Sunday afternoon.

What is the reaction to the shooting?

The Waffle House company issued a statement to ABC News: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident.

He saved lives - that is certain and we are all thankful to him for his bravery", Nashville Mayor David Briley said.

"Like you, I am shocked and devastated by how such senseless violence has taken the life of this young woman, an individual full of vast potential", said Belmont President Dr. Robert Fisher.
