Shame on Natalie Portman for Standing Against Israel

Shame on Natalie Portman for Standing Against Israel

Portman announced on Thursday that she would not come to Israel to take part in the Genesis Prize ceremony in June, in light of "recent events". I treasure my Israeli friends and family, Israeli food, books, art, cinema, and dance.

Portman, who was born in Jerusalem, was named the 2018 Genesis Prize laureate in November.

But a statement from the organization said the actress had pulled out of the June ceremony, where she would have officially received her prize from Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after becoming distressed by recent events in the country.

"I call on Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas) to rescind Portman's Israeli citizenship".

The actress had been slated to receive a prize awarded each year to internationally recognized Jewish personalities.

Held yearly in Jerusalem, actor Michael Douglas, sculptor Anish Kapoor and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg have all obtained the award since 2014. In December, the $1 million prize was doubled by Israeli philanthropist Morris Kahn, meaning that Portman would have received $2 million, money she said she would donate in full to programs focused on female empowerment and equality.

"This latest rebuff to Israeli cultural events and accolades, coming from an Israeli-American superstar, is arguably one of the strongest indicators yet of how toxic the Israel Brand has become, even in some liberal circles in Hollywood", he said.

Israeli politican Rachel Azaria said Portman's decision was a reflection of changing attitudes towards Israel among US Jews. Hundreds more have been wounded by Israeli troops during this time. Israel says it is doing what it must to defend its border.

"She's speaking for many in US Jewry, especially the young generation", Azaria wrote on Twitter.

Upton was likely treated very well by Israeli locals due to her great personality and obvious Shiksa appeal.

After Portman's refusal, the Genesis Prize Foundation chose to cancel the ceremony, stating that the organizers "fear that Ms. Portman's decision will cause our philanthropic initiative to be politicized, something we have worked hard for the past five years to avoid". "The price of losing them could be too high".

Portman's criticizing of Netanyahu dates back to his 2015 election day video message on Facebook urging supporters to hurry up and vote as, "The right-wing government is in danger, Arab voters are heading to the polling stations in droves".

While Portman did not address the politician by name, she concluded her post by saying, "Israel was created exactly 70 years ago as a haven for refugees from the Holocaust".
