Second Michigander sickened by romaine lettuce in multi-state E. coli outbreak

Second Michigander sickened by romaine lettuce in multi-state E. coli outbreak

The Missoula City-County Health Department - as well as the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services recommend that people follow the US Center's for Disease Control's advice to not eat pre-cut romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona area.

Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought romaine at home, including salads and salad mixes containing that lettuce, should throw it away immediately, federal health officials said - even if some had already been eaten with no ill effects.

You should also not purchase any romaine lettuce at a grocery store or eat it at a restaurant if it came from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

On April 18, the department reported an outbreak had caused 53 people across 16 states to become ill.

No deaths have been reported yet.

The Missoula City-County Health Department notes that E. coli is a risky foodborne pathogen that causes severe abdominal cramping, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, and sometimes fever one-to-10 days after exposure. This includes whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.

"Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten".

A map on the CDC website shows California has registered one case so far.

Thirty-one people have been hospitalized, including five people who have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

On average it takes from three to four days from a person with E. coli to get sick.

No recall has been issued as of Thursday because the CDC has been unable to identify a specific grower, supplier, distributor or brand responsible for the contaminated lettuce. In 2006, a nationwide outbreak involving contaminated baby spinach sickened more than 200 people. Figuring out where bagged, store-bought chopped lettuce was originally grown can be hard, so the CDC suggested that if you don't know for certain, avoid chopped romaine lettuce altogether.
