Mata throws fresh challenge at Man United after title loss

Mata throws fresh challenge at Man United after title loss

Manchester United can not step off the gas following last weekend's derby win over Premier League leaders Manchester City and must ensure they get the points required to secure second place, manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday (Apr 13).

A disappointed Juan Mata says Manchester United must shift their focus to a crucial week in their season following their 1-0 loss to West Brom on Sunday.

Vincent Kompany barely let Manchester City's Premier League title celebrations begin before setting his side the challenge of making it two in a row next season.

"We've won you the league, Manchester City, we've won you the league", sang West Brom's jubilant fans near the end of the game.

Even though his players took some time to adapt to his playing style the first season in 2016/17, this season there hasn't been a team who has been more consistent than Manchester City.

West Brom hadn't won in the Premier League since January, losing nine of their last 10 league games to slip to the brink of relegation.

"Three or four years ago I probably wouldn't have thought I'd go down that route", he said. "Eight titles are eight titles and three Premier Leagues are three Premier Leagues", he said.

"We are just trying to improve a little bit more, to give sequence to it". Stability inside the working week and for the last few weeks, I'm really happy with him'. 'We were masters in complication.

"I am surprised. The quality and experience of some of the players, the stability the squad, I am surprised they find themselves in this position", said Mourinho.

It was City's third title in seven seasons and easily its most convincing, with Pep Guardiola's team 16 points clear and still having five games to play this season. They have been the best team during the season and the distance of points at the end of the season will be the effect of that superiority that they showed. They were the right ones and the ones we believed in, I'm sure there are differences to how we play today compared to Bayern (Munich) and Barcelona, we survive and live by the strength of the team. Six years later, the finale was much more underwhelming, with Rodriguez nodding in from a corner to silence the majority of Old Trafford and set up one of the most surprising wins of the season.
