Cathy Yan Tapped to Direct Harley Quinn 'Birds of Prey' Movie

Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct a Birds of Prey feature film for Warner Bros. and DC.

Yan's debut feature film, Dead Pigs, won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film will be based on Birds of Prey, a series of comic books that revolves around the titular group of female superheroes, which through the years has included Batgirl, Black Canary, and the Huntress, among others; TheWrap reported in November 2016 that the Birds of Prey script was being written by Christina Hodson.

Although many details of the film are not yet known, it will reportedly be produced in part by Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment production company, with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment also being involved with the upcoming production. However, things are looking great for the director because, according to Deadline, she crafted a remarkable presentation for her vision of the movie.

Cathy Yan could make history as the first Asian woman to direct a major studio superhero movie. Yan got the job over numerous well established male directors, and because she is taking this giant leap with just one small-budget indie movie under her belt.

Warner Bros and DC Comics have had a very hard time in their efforts to match Marvel's cinematic successes.

Yan has a number of writing, producing, and directing credits on her resume.

The Variety story confirming Yan's involvement also notes that shooting is expected to begin near the end of the year, after Robbie's work on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is finished. The studio has been contemplating a direct sequel to Suicide Squad with Gavin O'Connor helming, a Joker team-up adventure with Jared Leto, a solo spin-off, and a loose adaptation of "Birds of Prey".

"I thought the scenes and what we did together was some of the most fun I've ever had on a set before".
