Congress releases list for ensuing Karnataka Assembly polls

Congress releases list for ensuing Karnataka Assembly polls

Karnataka's ruling Congress on Sunday declared 218 candidates for the May 12 assembly elections, withholding names for remaining six seats of the 224-member house.

Dr Yatheendra, son of the Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, will contest from Varuna constituency in upcoming Legislative Assembly elections.

This has prompted BJP chief Amit Shah to ask state and central leaders to campaign intensively in Karnataka, where elections are due in May, and increased the likelihood of a Gujarat-like all-out canvassing by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the southern state, the BJP sources said.

Congress leader from C.V. Raman Nagar P. Ramesh, who had lost to S. Raghu of BJP in the 2013 Assembly elections, by a margin of 8,419 votes, joined the Janata Dal (Secular) on Friday.

There is a great possibility of releasing the first list of around 180 candidates in a total of 224 constituencies in the state, the sources said. Since the seat is reserved for ladies, Qamarul Islam's wife K Fatima has been fielded by the Congress from Gulbarga Uttar.

The deliberations were also centered around the grant of party tickets to family members of Chief Minister Siddharamaiah and state unit chief G Parameswara and some senior ministers. Besides only 4 tickets were given to kin of Congress leaders.

True to the principles of Democracy, more than "enrolled" 500 beggars have got the voting rights with their names added in the Voter's List through a special drive launched as per High Court Direction to Election Commission for the May 12 Assembly elections in Karnataka. VVPAT machines, apart from EVMs, will be deployed in Karnataka for the polls. The state is now being ruled by the Congress which has a total of 113 MLAs in the house of 224. "In some surveys the Congress is ahead and in some others the BJP", a leader associated with the BJP's Karnataka affairs said.

The date of notification is April 17 and the last date to file nominations is April 24.

Speaking to India Today, Congress General Secretary incharge KC Venugopal said the party is clear that workers and winnability matters.

The JD (S) has allied both with the BJP and the Congress with the past.
