Michael Cohen seeks restraining order on items seized by feds

Michael Cohen seeks restraining order on items seized by feds

Cohen did not appear in court Friday morning and has not been charged with a crime.

Michael Cohen, whose hotel room and office were raided by the FBI Monday, was first noticed by the president in the early 2000s during a tussle between tenants and the management company of a Trump Organization-run property, according to a Associated Press story on Wednesday.

They said agents had already searched multiple email accounts maintained by Cohen.

The judge also heard from a new lawyer for Trump, Joanna Hendon, who said the president had "an acute interest" in the case. Sources say Cohen still remains Trump's attorney. People close to Mr. Trump and Mr. Cohen regard the warrant as an attempt by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, to pry into Mr. Trump's personal life - using other prosecutors as his proxy.

Cohen's attorney and a spokesman for Cohen's attorney did not reply to requests for comment.

Prosecutors also confirmed in a court filing on Friday that they have been investigating Cohen for months, largely over his business dealings rather than his legal work. Agents seized Cohen's computers and phones, as well as documents related to a payment of $130,000 he said he made to former adult film actress Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.

Judge Kimba Wood shouldn't agree, contended the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY.

The wide-ranging criminal investigation into Michael Cohen is said to have left President Donald Trump more rattled than the Russian Federation investigation being conducted by special counsel Robert Mueller. Cohen frequently taped conversations with adversaries and opposing lawyers, according to the two people briefed.

Lawyers for Cohen want the court to order prosecutors to temporarily halt an examination of the material that was seized.

And the NY search warrant makes clear that the authorities are interested in his unofficial role in the campaign.

Wood adjourned the hearing until Monday to give lawyers for Trump an opportunity to weigh in on the issue. She says she had an affair with Trump.

The Justice Department is asking for a so-called taint team to vet the material seized in the raids Monday, as is standard process.

Though Wood ultimately granted Cohen's team additional time, she referred to the prosecution's concerns as "well-taken".

RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said she spoke by telephone with Broidy, and "he tendered his resignation".

Lawyer Michael Avenatti, who now represents Daniels, responded to the CNN report in a tweet on Friday.

Harrison's assertion that Cohen's documents included privileged communications involving Cohen as both an attorney and a client did not, McKay argued, validate that claim.

Investigators have also been looking into a blueprint of tax evasion, fraud, money laundering as well as other possible offenses in Cohen's agreements, for example his work to Trump plus several true estate trades the origin mentioned.
