Defense statements set for Day 2 of Cosby retrial

Defense statements set for Day 2 of Cosby retrial

Because Constand, who has accused the 80-year-old comedian of drugging and sexually assaulting her in his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004, will once again be a key witness in the retrial (she testified last year in the first trial which ended in a hung jury), she naturally became the sharp focus of opening arguments.

Prosecutors opened the retrial on Monday in suburban Philadelphia with an answer to one of the case's biggest questions.

Bill Cosby's defence attorney launched a relentless character assassination in a Pennsylvania courtroom on Tuesday, against the woman accusing the comic of drugging and molesting her, calling her a con artist and a liar who was interested in only one thing: "money, money and lots more money".

It was also confirmed publicly for the first time yesterday that Cosby did, indeed, pay his accuser Andrea Constand millions of dollars in alleged hush money in advance of the trial.

Constand, 44, claims she considered Cosby a professional mentor at the time and only accepted three blue pills during their visit after he reassured her they were "herbal" and would help her relax.

He said all Constand really wanted from Cosby was "money, money and lots more money". But Mesereau's punishing portrayal represented a new level of intensity in the defense attempt to disparage Cosby's accuser, painting a far darker image of her than the one laid out by Cosby's defense team in the first trial.

Prosecutors say it was Cosby who betrayed Constand's trust by giving her pills and then assaulting her.

The TV star once known as "America's Dad" has pleaded not guilty to three counts of aggravated indecent assault, each punishable by up to a decade in prison.

A psychiatrist named Barbara Ziv took the stand Tuesday as the state's first witness.

Cosby, the attorney said, "made the bad mistake of confiding in this person what was going on in his life". "It felt personal to me".

USA prosecutors sought to portray Bill Cosby as a serial predator Tuesday, bringing a music teacher to testify how the disgraced star assaulted her while posing as a mentor at a private estate in Nevada 34 years ago.

The DA office's turnaround came after a judge unsealed civil court deposition testimony in which Cosby admitted he obtained seven prescriptions for Quaaludes in the 1970s so he could give the powerful drug to women he found sexually attractive. For the next four days, Thomas said she remembered only "little snapshots".

Earlier Tuesday, Mesereau told the jury that Constand was in deep financial trouble and set out to exploit her relationship with Cosby. They included inconsistencies in her statements to police; at least 100 phone calls between her and Cosby after the assault was alleged to have occurred, most placed by Ms Constand; and a fraudulent pyramid scheme Ms Constand allegedly operated while at Temple.

The defense lawyer went on to present a raft of other criticisms of Constand. The friend claims Constand once spoke of extracting money from celebrities by making such accusations.

"You are going to ask yourself what did she want from Bill Cosby, " the jury was told by Mr Mesereau, as he shook his distinctive shock of shoulder-length white hair. "We'll prove it. A con artist".

Andrea Constand, the complainant in the Cosby case, walks in a hallway during deliberations in the first sexual assault trial, on June 16, 2017. It's a word that's taken on new weight in an era when more victims are coming forward and several of Cosby's accusers are sitting in front of him in the courtroom.

Under no such constraints this time, the defense let loose on Constand.

The comedian arrived at the courthouse Tuesday amid heightened security after a topless protester who appeared on several episodes of The Cosby Show as a child jumped a barricade on Monday and got within a few feet of Cosby as he entered the courthouse. But this time around, he is allowing up to five of them to testify in a major setback for Cosby's defence.
