Zuckerberg Faces Congress On Privacy "Mistakes", While FTC Probe Looms

Zuckerberg Faces Congress On Privacy

The controversy wiped away tens of billions of dollars from Facebook's market value, prompted political scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic and even raised the once unthinkable question of whether Zuckerberg should step down as CEO.

"I don't think I put enough information on the web to be anxious", Malcolm said.

In the statement, Facebook admitted that it may not ever know the exact amount of users that were impacted. In spite of this investment, Zuckerberg can't expect an easy ride - as the bosses of other companies in industries facing public and political ire have found.

As of 3:30 p.m. Associated Press reporters around the world have been surveying users, none of whom have reported seeing anything from Facebook. Advertisers will first have to be approved by the social media company, although that vetting process remains unclear.

If Zuckerberg does not provide satisfactory answers this week, Congress is more likely to push new laws to strictly regulate Facebook. She said by the end of the week, all users should receive a notice and users may see it on their desktop or cell phone.

The leaked data was said to be inappropriately used by Cambridge Analytica in activities allegedly connected with US President Donald Trump's election campaign in 2016.

"It's clear now that we didn't do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well", Zuckerberg plans to tell them, according to his prepared remarks, expressing contrition yet again for allowing third parties to harvest the data without the consent of Facebook's users.

His conciliatory tone precedes two days of congressional hearings where Zuckerberg is set to answer questions about Facebook user data being improperly appropriated by a political consultancy and the role the network played in the US 2016 election.

"For conservatives like me", Eric Wilson, Marco Rubio's 2016 presidential campaign digital director and founder of LearnTestOptimize.com, recently wrote in a Politico op-ed, "it's not easy to call for increased regulation and antitrust enforcement, but Facebook has shown time and again that its leaders, including Mark Zuckerberg himself, aren't capable of responsibly wielding their huge power and influence in Americans' lives". Since the remarks are for Wednesday morning, this means everyone who was affected should see a message by then.

Facebook announced on April 4 that the number of affected accounts was adjusted to 87 million.

The hearings were scheduled to address Facebook's use and protection of user data in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. An app can ask for access to anything in your profile - and can declare some of that information "required" - and you have to decide if you trust it with that data and if you trust the developer to delete your information should you later remove the app.

Some of the lawmakers who will be grilling the Facebook CEO have given a preview of what Zuckerberg should expect.

You could make the argument that he is a brilliant mind and that nobody knows the company better than the 33-year-old, which puts him in the best place to fix the problems. The company's data practices are under investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

Facebook grows its finances by more people signing up to the social media service and those already signed up spending more time using it. CNBC reported over the weekend that CubeYou misled users into thinking its quizzes were for non-profit academic research but actually sold the information it gathered to marketers.

On Saturday, Facebook said it suspended AggregateIQ, a Canadian political consulting firm, amid media reports it had ties to Cambridge Analytica.
