'A Quiet Place' roars with $50M at the box office

'A Quiet Place' roars with $50M at the box office

A Quiet Place won't be quite as leggy; its story has real substance in its paternal narrative but that's not quite as major as the social importance that made Get Out a cultural phenomenon.

The A Quiet Place Plot: In the modern horror thriller A Quiet Place, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival.

John Krasinski's A Quiet Place made a thunderous debut at the box office, opening with $50 million in ticket sales and rumbling to the year's second-best weekend after Black Panther, according to studio estimates Sunday. Krasinski worked closely with the famed effects company Industrial Light & Magic, or ILM, to bring the sound-detecting monsters of "A Quiet Place" to life.

Fans of The Office are meme-ing A Quiet Place by making new trailers spliced with clips from the NBC comedy and highlighting relevant episodes of the show that nicely sum up the horror film's plot.

A Quiet Place was not the only new release out this weekend because Universal Pictures launched its amusing comedy called "Blockers". In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form confirmed it was never meant to be a stealth sequel, and they don't know where that theory came from. But then I saw "A Quiet Place", and I, too, was drawn back into the thrill, imagination and fear of the futuristic unknown. This was never going to be a Cloverfield movie. It was weird timing, though, because when we were writing the script, 10 Cloverfield Lane was at Paramount.

Even for those of us who disagree with such a statement - that is, all of us who appreciate at least some of the films produced after 1927 - it's apparent that the masters of early cinema had a way of communicating visually that filmmakers since have rarely, if ever, matched. It was at a pre-release screening, but the theater was full of people who had won or otherwise obtained passes from the local radio station, so the crowd wasn't unlike one you'd find in a theater tonight. I think it kind of went away when the Cloverfield movie, you know the Paradox, came out. "(ILM was) involved in the process, and they have said to me many times that this is one of their most favorite experiences, because they felt like they were part of the team".

Form: That's not our world. Like most things, there's also a tendency to overdo what works, such as the eventually tiresome fascination with found-footage movies after "The Blair Witch Project" took the box-office by storm in 1999.

When asked how their careers would have been different had they joined the MCU, Kransinki responded: "I think "A Quiet Place" definitely wouldn't exist". It turns out Abrams took a movie called The Celler and retrofitted it to become part of the series, and his vision for the series was to take movies with strong concepts and make an anthology series under the Cloverfield banner. "It was really incredible and brought an extra depth to the film", said Scott Beck, co-screenwriter of A Quiet Place.

"If everyone did it I would be up for it", she said during an appearance on The Jess Cagle Interview.
