Trump says he was unaware of Stormy Daniels payment

Trump says he was unaware of Stormy Daniels payment

It was the president's first acknowledgment of the scandal that has haunted him for weeks. Michael is my attorney.

The president said he wasn't sure where Cohen got the money either, and ignored the question asking if the lawyer had an account to cover expenses.

"You'll have to ask Michael Cohen", he said.

Asked why Cohen made the payment if there was no truth to the woman's allegations, Mr. Trump said reporters would "have to ask Michael Cohen". Michael is my attorney.

Avenatti, who has relentlessly pushed his client's case against Trump on national television, is now requesting documents and records from the Treasury Department pertaining to the "suspicious activity report" filed on the 2016 payment.

Ms Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, says she signed an agreement to keep quiet about her claims in exchange for $130,000 in October 2016, days before the presidential election.

During a press briefing aboard Air Force One today, April 5, he told reporters that he didn't know about the "hush agreement" or where the money (paid for by his personal lawyer Michael Cohen) came from.

So, is Trump hanging Cohen out to dry as a strategic move, or is the president simply (and finally) giving into temptation by talking freely on the subject?

Daniels claims she began the one-year affair in 2006, the same year Trump's wife Melania gave birth to their son.
