Jeremy Corbyn finally says 'evidence points towards Russia' after Salisbury attack

Jeremy Corbyn finally says 'evidence points towards Russia' after Salisbury attack

The Labour leader has been given security briefings on the incident, but the spokesman said the Government may have more information.

BRITAIN'S opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn today suggested "mafia-like groups" in Russian Federation could have been responsible for the nerve attack on a former double agent.

Asked by Julia whether the Iraq debacle makes it legitimate for us to question official dossiers, Meyer said "it was a different Government" and there is no comparison between Tony Blair's WMD dossier and today's events.

Corbyn, a life-long socialist known for standing by his convictions, faced ridicule and worse in the House of Commons by refusing to blame Russian Federation, as May announced a series of retaliatory measures, including the expulsion of 23 diplomats.

Prime Minister May said she was "surprised and shocked" by the Labour leader's statement and said most Labour MPs will be "equally surprised" by the spokesperson's comments.

"There was overwhelming bipartisan support for attacking Libya, but it proved to be wrong".

He also suggested that the nerve agent attack could have been carried out by Russian-linked gangsters rather than ordered by Moscow.

Confirming Labour's support for Mrs May's actions, Mr Corbyn said: "We agree with the Government's action in relation to Russian diplomats".

May was still taking MPs' questions when she was asked about that statement.

"This is the question of the culpability of the Russian state for an act on our soil".

Mr Smith took to social media to throw his weight behind an article that said Mr Corbyn's position was "dispiriting" and that he had effectively urged the Prime Minister to "acquiesce" to Russian Federation. "But in my years in parliament, I have seen clear thinking in an worldwide crisis overwhelmed by emotion and hasty judgments too many times", he said.

It was also reported that shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry refused to back Mr Corbyn, telling a London seminar: "We utterly condemn this despicable act and support all the measures taken by the Government today".

This morning Griffiths offered her fulsome support.

Further criticism came from the DUP's Sammy Wilson.

"They stand full square behind the government in the analysis that we have shown and the action that we have taken".

Jeremy Corbyn is facing fresh pressure over his stance on the Salisbury poisoning after another shadow Cabinet minister warned there can be "no ifs no buts" about holding Russian Federation to account. However, also there is a history in relation to weapons of mass destruction and intelligence which is problematic, to put it mildly.

"In the meantime I think it is essential we follow the evidence and what the evidence produces", he added.

She added: "What we are talking about here in the United Kingdom is the use of a chemical weapon, a nerve agent, a military grade nerve agent against people here in the United Kingdom".

Speaking on a visit to Carlisle, Mr Corbyn said: 'I was extremely definite yesterday that I totally condemn this attack.

These views closely resemble Mr Corbyn's who said in 2005 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was "the father of the Cold War", and said it should have "shut up shop in 1990". "What more evidence does he require?"

What did Mr Corbyn's spokesman say?

Asked by Sky News whether they were happy with the Labour leader's response, one member of the shadow cabinet said: "I could not possibly comment".

The motion was swiftly signed by a number of prominent critics of Mr Corbyn, some of whom went public with their criticism of the leader's senior aide Seumas Milne for suggesting that British security agencies could be to blame for the attack.
