Opposition force adjournments of Parliament for fourth day

Opposition force adjournments of Parliament for fourth day

At the 90-minute meeting of the leaders of political parties, Mahajan raised the issue of ending the stalemate and urged floor leaders of all parties not to create disruptions or hold up placards, stressing that the actions gave a bad image to the institution.

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessed one adjournment each before adjourning finally for the day as opposition stalled proceedings by trooping into the well amidst sloganeering. Members from the TRS too were seen protesting holding placards.

Opposition parties as well as AIADMK members resumed their protests in Rajaya Sabha today on various issues soon after the lawmakers spoke on the occasion of the International Women Day.

There are many important issues, including banking fraud, which can be discussed only if the House functions properly, he added.

The disruption in the Lok Sabha did not present a good image of the House to the country and the world, she said, pointing out that people watched the proceedings in Parliament from India and overseas.

"Lets write a new chapter with confidence, self respect and the spirit of nationalism", she said.

"This is private members' business and not government business", said Kurien.

External affair minister Sushma Swaraj said she favoured women's quota and continued to support it. She said there was also a need of the cooperation among villagers to ensure the maximum utilisation of the allocated funds for various departments.

However, the amiable atmosphere in the House was short- lived as slogan shouting members from the opposition Congress as well some from the AIADMK trooped into the Well. "This is sad", he commented before adjourning the proceedings.

When the House reassembled, minister of state for Finance Pon Radhakrishnan tabled the supplementary demands for grants for 2017-18. AIADMK members were seen raising the Cauvery water dispute. The Congress and Trinamool Congress members were demanding a discussion on the banking scam and a response from the Prime Minister on it.

Amid the din, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy (Trinamul Cong) wanted to raise a point of order but the members continued raising slogans in the Well. The Speaker then adjourned the House for the day.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who had convened the meeting, later hoped that the deadlock would be resolved in a day or two.

Among those who attended the meeting were deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar and his deputy Arjun Ram Meghwal, BJP's Rakesh Singh, Congress leaders KC Venugopal and KH Muniyappa, TMC's Saugata Roy and Kalyan Banerjee, Left leaders MB Rajesh and PK Sreemathi Teacher and the Shiv Sena's Anandrao Adsul.

Before the House saw its first adjournment, Mr Naidu announced the nomination of JD (U) member Kahkashan Parveen on the panel of presiding officers to conduct the proceedings of the House, making her the first woman to be included in the panel in the recent times.

The conference, being attended by Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and Presiding Officers of State Legislatures, will also offer a special opportunity to the delegates whose constituencies have greater possibilities and aspirations of development.
