Washington State Passes Law Protecting Net Neutrality

Washington State Passes Law Protecting Net Neutrality

"All Washingtonians should enjoy equal and unfettered access to the educational, social and economic power of the internet", Inslee said. Moreover, the FCC's net neutrality repeal order cited historical precedence of the agency's supposed authority to preempt any state laws.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signs a bill in Olympia, Wash., that makes Washington the first state to set up its own net-neutrality requirements in response to the Federal Communications Commission's recent repeal of Obama-era rules.

Plus: There are 25 states total planning similar legislation.

The new law, which goes into effect in June, into effect by June 6, prohibits Internet service providers from blocking legal content and slowing down a website's speed unless the content provider pays a higher service price.

In a bipartisan effort, the state's legislators passed House Bill 2282. which was signed into law Monday by Gov. Jay Inslee.

"BillNumber=2282&Year=2017&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery">voted late past year to prohibit companies offering internet access from blocking, throttling, or paid prioritization. They've argued the 2015 rules were too burdensome and held back investments.

But a vocal and growing list of opponents, including tech firms and public interest groups, have promised to mount legal challenges to preserve the rules which they say are at the heart of what makes for a fair internet. In December, the FCC reversed these net neutrality rules and last month published its new order in the Federal Register.

"States need to act because under the Trump administration, we have seen citizens, including seven million in Washington, stripped of core protections like the open internet". "It allows a student in Washington to connect with researchers all around the world - or a small business to compete in the global marketplace".

More: Net neutrality: The FCC voted to end it. During a ceremony for the bill signing, he called the legislation a "free speech bill".

Washington state was among more than 20 states and the District of Columbia that sued in January to try and block the FCC's action. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray are part of an effort to force a Senate vote on whether to override the FCC's net-neutrality reversal, which took effect on February 22.
