Gunman outside White House dies after'shooting himself in head

The Secret Service said he had "allegedly suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound".

Police in Washington DC confirmed that an "adult male has been declared deceased".

The incident comes days after a vehicle hit a security barrier near the White House, resulting in the arrest and charge of a 35-year-old female driver.

The name of the man has yet to be released to the public as authorities are scouring for his relatives. "We're working to notify next of kin".

The man approached the fence line, removed a concealed handgun and fired several rounds, none of which appear to have been aimed at the White House, a Secret Service spokesperson said.

President Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., at the time of the incident.

Staff were instructed to take shelter inside after the incident occurred in the afternoon.

The White House was placed on lockdown, and the surrounding area was cordoned off.

U.S. Secret Service responded to the sound of shots fired.
