The US launched a rocket Atlas V with a meteorological satellite

The US launched a rocket Atlas V with a meteorological satellite

Teams have two hours to launch the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration payload. The 45th Weather Squadron at the launch pad evaluated that there are 80% chances for favorable weather conditions for the launch on March 01.

A ULA Atlas 5 rocket launches the GOES S satellite on March 1, 2018.

A satellite launched today will augment the GOES-16 weather satellite and provide broad coverage with powerful new weather monitoring technology for meteorologists to provide life and property-saving forecasts.

The satellite should help improve forecasts for storms forming in the Pacific, and allow experts to see storms churning in high resolution.

It's the third weather tracker launched by NASA in just over a year: "three brilliant eyes in the sky", as NOAA satellite director Stephen Volz puts it. GOES-16 launched in late 2016 and an environmental satellite rocketed into a polar orbit from California last November.

From there, it will provide fast, multi-spectral images of weather patterns affecting the Pacific Ocean as far west as New Zealand, including Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Central America and, of course, the western United States. GOES-16, meanwhile, was tasked with standing watch over the eastern USA and Atlantic Ocean out to Africa.

Built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems, the new GOES satellites feature an advanced high-resolution camera, a sensitive magnetometer, an ultraviolet X-ray sensor to measure solar radiation, an ultraviolet imager to constantly monitor the sun and sensors to measure charged particles from the sun that can affect communications and navigation. A previous weather satellite, GOES-16, was launched on November 19, 2016 and is now monitoring weather conditions along the eastern seaboard of the country.

"It's a significant improvement", said Eric Webster, Harris' general manager of environmental solutions.

NOAA funds, manages and plans to operate the GOES-R Series satellites. The company operates centers in Maryland and Virginia with a backup location in West Virginia.

The first stage booster of the Atlas V rocket equipped with Russian RD-180 engine, its separation took place in a regular mode after three minutes of the launch.
