Dangerous Snow Conditions Cause Inbounds Avalanche at Squaw Valley, Sweeps Five Guests

Heavy snowfall is taking a toll on the slopes as an avalanche hit in Squaw Valley Friday afternoon, requiring rescue efforts and the hospitalization of two people.

He said guests saw it happen and were able to pinpoint where people were buried. The RECCO® Rescue System is two-part technology, something ski resort and rescue teams caryy.

On Thursday, the county ordered up to 30,000 people to evacuate areas near wildfire burn scars, and officials say 87 percent did so.

Rocklin resident Wenyu Zhang, 42, was found by Squaw Valley Ski Patrol, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office. All people were accounted for and search operations have concluded, according to Squaw Valley.

Squaw Alpine remained closed on March 2nd and today will have delayed opening due to the high avalanche danger.

On Friday, another snowboarder, Heather Turping, 39, heard someone scream "Avalanche!" as she saw a "cloud of snow coming down". "We hold them closely in our thoughts and prayers", a written statement from Squaw Valley stated. A Squaw Valley spokeswoman said the resort, as of 7 a.m. Friday, had received nearly three feet of snow in the past 24 hours. There were no life-threatening injuries reported.

Deputies completed a search with K-9s and probes and confirmed at 5:00 p.m. that there are no other victims involved in the avalanche.

A powerful winter storm that was predicted to drop up to five feet in the Sierras has impacted the region in a big way.

The avalanche that hit Friday at the Squaw Valley Ski Resort caught five people - one day after a snowboarder died there during a blizzard as a winter storm rolled through California.

"Fire got everyone out", the official said. He was reported missing by friends Thursday night.

Zhang went missing in the blizzard now hitting Lake Tahoe. He was wearing a helmet when he was found.

His cause of death has not yet been undetermined.
