Turkish women sentenced to death in Iraq for joining IS

Turkish women sentenced to death in Iraq for joining IS

Human Rights Watch has criticised the courts for handing down death sentences for non-violent crimes, and claims that numerous women were tricked or coerced into joining the terrorist group.

Also, the Iraqi authorities handed over four women and 27 children of Islamic State families to Russian Federation, after they all were acquitted of charges of involvement in terrorist activities against civilians and forces, the Iraqi foreign ministry was quoted as saying by IANS. Another Turkish woman was sentenced to death in February, while 10 others of various nationalities were given life-imprisonment terms for alleged ISIS membership.

Also on Thursday, an Iraqi newspaper reported that more than 1,500 foreign women and children from the families of IS militants are being held by the Iraqi authorities, which are coordinating with the countries of origin to decide their fate.

One woman said she had taken part in battles against Iraqi coalition forces as they advanced on Isis' Iraqi stronghold of Mosul previous year.

Thousands of people, including hundreds of foreigners, are awaiting trial in Iraq on charges of aiding or being members of Isis, including 560 women and 600 minors.

The public defender argued that the women had been trafficked into jihadi territory or tricked by their husbands.

In January a German woman captured during the 2017 battle for Mosul was sentenced to death for joining IS.

Several rights groups have condemned Iraq's treatment of suspected militants, pointing to inhumane prison conditions and a judicial process which does adhere to worldwide standards.

Baghdad declared military victory over ISIS in December, after having expelled the jihadists from all urban centers they had held in northern and western Iraq since 2014.

The Iraqi court has been on its toes ever since major cities in the country were under attack by the ISIS militants between 2016 and 17.
