Ester Ledecka Makes History, Winning Olympic Gold In Both Snowboarding And Skiing

Ester Ledecka Makes History, Winning Olympic Gold In Both Snowboarding And Skiing

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games will conclude on Sunday with the Ice Hockey final between Russian Federation and Germany and the 30km classic style cross country skiing, among other events.

It will be remembered as one of the great moments in Olympic history.

"Fantastic, really, it was a great day".

One week ago, Ledecka stunned a strong field including defending champion Anna Veith and American Lindsey Vonn to win the super-G, becoming one of the stories of the Games.

When Ester took to the slopes as a child, starting on skis and then strapping on a snowboard, her father Janek Ledecky - Czechs sometimes vary the last vowel of their family name depending on gender - recalled that he and his wife "were not pushy parents".

"If she chose to just absorb all the energy from the super-G medal and kind of check off the Olympic medal, we'd be having a different conversation today", he said. "She's the hardest-working athlete I've ever met", Trapp said, adding that she will train in any conditions "and if she doesn't come out with the fastest runs she's mad about it". They are with me the whole time and even my skiing coach was here today. Everyone was screaming. I thought, "OK, now it's weird". "She never wants to race the girls, and all the guys are like, 'Ester, I don't know if I can do this, '" Trapp said with a laugh.

"She expects a lot of herself".

ALPINE TEAM EVENT: Switzerland won the debut of the event, but Norway's third-place finish gave it a record 38 medals at a single Winter Olympics.

And do both she did. Still, don't dismiss the difficulty of this feat.

Time and again, though, as she reviewed her life, her likes and her successes while swapping one liners and expressions of love with her entourage, Ledecka returned to one central theme. But after winning the gold in yesterday's snowboard parallel giant slalom, a distinction can no longer be drawn between the alter-egos.

Her victory in the parallel giant slalom, an event in which she is the reigning world champion, was far less of a shock.

Elsewhere, Canada's Sebastien Toutant won gold in the Men's Snowboard Big Air at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre. "The first, but not the last", Niskanen said. "But one you talk to us, we'll open up". She battled back however, and after moving ahead at the second checkpoint, she finally came home to claim a historic gold by 0.46 seconds.

Ester Ledecka warded off the late afternoon cold Saturday in a Czech Republic team jacket that was white on one side and gold on the other. "My plan is to stay with my heart, so for now I think I will do both because I love both", she said.
