David and Louise Turpin to make court appearance in captivity case

David and Louise Turpin to make court appearance in captivity case

Osborn spoke about the siblings' progress Friday, the same day that Riverside County prosecutors said they had filed additional charges against the siblings' parents, David Turpin, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49. The seven adult siblings are in the nearby Corona Medical Center, where they're being exposed to everything from Harry Potter movies to iPads.

"That in itself is a new experience for them, understanding that they do have rights and they do have a voice", said attorney Jack Osborn.

Since being rescued from what law enforcement officials called a "house of horrors", the children of California couple David and Louise Turpin are looking forward to life on their own terms, those close to the siblings said.

The young adult victims are now "getting up and making the day happen for themselves, getting out of bed and deciding what they want to eat". The parents are being held on $12 million bail each.

The original indictment charged each with 12 counts of torture, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult, six counts of child abuse and 12 counts of false imprisonment.

According to the news website, the adult children are being treated at a California medical centre, while the younger children have been split between two foster homes.

The horrid living conditions the children were subjected to led one sibling, a 17-year-old girl, to escape through a window of the family home last month.

Corona mayor Karen Spiegel has been working with the nurses who cared for the children, and indicated that the children are humble and appreciative of little things that many people take for granted. There are lots of firsts.

Some of the victims had never had shoes, Spiegel said, recounting how when one boy was given his first shoes, they were too tight, but he wouldn't relinquish them until a bigger pair arrived because he was scared he would never get shoes back.

Louise Turpin, along with her husband, is accused of torturing her kids.

. They're embracing the relationships they're developing with their (caregivers). Well, she saw something and did something, " Bertagna said. "They're beginning to prosper". They set up an outdoor area where they can play sports and exercise.

Caleb Mason, an attorney for the older Turpin siblings, said Friday that "our clients are doing very well in their recovery".

David and Louise Turpin are facing almost a century in jail each if convicted as charged.
