Saudi Arabia to construct opera house in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia to construct opera house in Riyadh

The General Entertainment Authority Chief, Ahmad bin Aqeel al-Khatib, said construction of the building had already begun, adding that the house construction was aimed at attaining worldwide standard in the entertainment sector.

Saudi Arabia yesterday announced plans to spend billions on building new venues and flying in Western acts, in a total overhaul of its entertainment sector that would have been unthinkable not long ago.

In recent months, Saudi Arabia has organised concerts, a Comic-Con popular culture festival and a mixed-gender national day celebration that saw people dancing in the streets to thumping electronic music for the first time. In December, it was announced the first movie theaters will open in 2018-with cinemas having been banned since the 1980s. It all falls under the progressive Crown Prince's Vision 2030 program. Women were recently granted the right to drive and attend football matches.

He added that 500 companies have already registered to organize entertainment events this year. "Implementation has begun and we will continue until we achieve the highest standards in the world", Al-Khatib said, adding that it plans to invest USD64 billion in the entertainment sector in the next 10 years. His org is "proud to be one of the drivers of transformation in the Kingdom, through its clear goal to build a world-class entertainment industry that will put the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the global tourism and entertainment map".
