Apple Repair Centre Apparently Linked to Flood of False 911 Calls

Apple Repair Centre Apparently Linked to Flood of False 911 Calls

Since October 2017, Apple devices have made approximately 1,600 accidental 9-1-1 calls from its Elk Grove facility, local police told local news outlet CBS 13.

Apple launched its auto-call feature with Emergency SOS function previous year in Apple watches, iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus so that at times of danger a person can easily make an emergency call to 911 - emergency services in the US.

Flooding emergency services with false alerts can take away focus from real problems that are on going. The devices recently gained 4G connectivity in some models and can be used to conduct an emergency call without requiring an iPhone or wifi.

The police say the issue isn't compromising public safety "at this point", but said resolving the problem is of paramount importance.

"We're aware of 911 calls originating from our Elk Grove fix and refurbishment facility", Apple's statement reads.

Since Jan. 1, Hampton said, the sheriff's communication center has received 47 uninitialized 911 calls and has been able to document that 30 of those came from the Apple facility.

'We call back and find out, 'oh it was my Apple Watch, I was exercising or I hit it wrong or hit the wrong button, ' a dispatcher told Michigan's WNEM.

Emergency dispatchers have an incredibly important and stressful job, which is made infinitely more hard when the calls they receive turn out to be false alarms.

Apple hasn't confirmed which device or devices are placing the 911 calls. Apple Watch also has the same feature.

'We take this seriously and we are working closely with local law enforcement to investigate the cause and ensure this doesn't continue, ' they added.

The latest Apple Watch has become notorious for accidentally calling the cops thanks to a minor design flaw that was meant to improve its user interface.

If you've accidentally triggered SOS on your own iPhone or Apple Watch, you can switch off the auto call feature-the source of these problematic 911 calls.

The issue is likely this SOS feature.

To access it, users hold down the side button and one of the volume buttons for an extended period.

According to the report, accidentally touching a button for a long time or pressing side button on your watch can automatically generate a call to 911, even user didn't know that whether he/she has called 911 or not.
