World's BIGGEST brain tumour removed after patient told it was INOPERABLE

World's BIGGEST brain tumour removed after patient told it was INOPERABLE

The weight of a similar case reported earlier has been 1.4 kgs.

Pal had some swelling under the scalp, headache, heaviness, and complete blindness in his two eyes when he was admitted to the hospital's department of neurosurgery on February 1.

Pal is now recovering in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit and is in stable condition. Doctors said he should gradually regain his sight and health.

Trimurti Nadkarni, the neurosurgeon who performed the surgery with a five-member medical team, said that Pal's tumor was much bigger than his head.

Doctors in India say Pal's brain tumour grew so big that it weighed almost two kilograms and measured almost 20-by-30-by-30 centimetres, according to local news reports.

Dr. Nadkarni said that the tumor grew out of the skull and the scalp grew over the tumor.

Indian surgeons have removed what they say is the world's largest brain tumour. Nadkarni said, "We have looked up medical literature from all over the world and it is the largest to be excised successfully".

"Such large tumours are rare and a surgical challenge".

Santlal Pal, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was brought to Mumbai after hospitals in Varanasi and Allahabad refused to admit him claiming that the surgery was too risky. But that 10 percent put pressure on Pal's brain, damaging his vision; it could have led to further problems, including paralysis and neurological damage, the doctors told The Hindu.

Stemming from within the brain, the tumor protruded the skull and continued growth on the man's scalp. The doctors said that the tumor resulted in Pal losing his eyesight but hoped that he would regain his vision now.

In addition to cutting away the growth, doctors had to remove skull bone that had moved into the brain.

.

He needed a transfusion of 11 units of blood, and also had to spend three days on life support after the surgery, but is now thankfully on the mend.

But his wife, Manju, told newspaper The Hindu that they had been told by doctors at three different hospitals in Uttar Pradesh that his large tumour was inoperable.

Surgery to remove a brain tumour carries risks, such as infection and bleeding.
