Airbnb is going mainstream and adding regular hotels to its listings

Airbnb is going mainstream and adding regular hotels to its listings

The Airbnb plus homes have been personally verified for quality and comfort by hosts and past guests. Rather than just booking a hotel at a luxury resort you find on TripAdvisor, Airbnb is trying to build the credibility that it can offer unique experiences you won't find in those hotel environments - whether that's a tiny apartment in the middle of Shinjuku, Japan, to a handsome condo in the middle of Ponta Delgada in the Azores.

Airbnb is dispatching inspectors to rate thousands of the properties listed on its home-rental service in an effort to reassure travellers they're booking nice places to stay.

The news is Airbnb's latest foray into experiences that make it more like a conventional hotel company. Available through Airbnb for Family and Airbnb for Work, these accommodations will allow users to search for "social stays, weddings, honeymoons, and group getaways", according to the company's release, with an option for dinner parties coming later this year.

It also comes with a few extra advantages for hosts, Airbnb Plus homes are ranked higher in search and have a dedicated section in the app. Hosts need to pay a one-time fee of $149 to apply for the program. Airbnb Plus hosts benefit from top placement, in-home services such as design consultation and expert photography, and premium support.

A pilot with 10,000 guests starts this spring and it will be rolled out in the summer. Visit airbnb.com/superhost to see the full range of benefits. These include webinars to help build your business, additional cash bonuses for referring new hosts and, one of the more prominent additions, custom URLs for listings.

He also announced the creation of a new store for Superhosts, which would give them exclusive pricing on smart home devices.

Airbnb is also shifting more focus on its guests.

Chesky admitted that in spite of its phenomenal success in the past 10 years, there are still pockets of individuals who have yet choose the platform as the default for their accommodation needs. Later this year, Airbnb will unveil a new guest membership program offering benefits across the entire trip. Hundreds of replies came back with ideas such as stocked fridges and airport pickups. "It's your passport to a new travel lifestyle", said Chesky. The American Hotel & Lodging Association, the lobbying arm of the hotel industry, fired off a terse statement from Troy Flanagan, VP of state & local government affairs, subsequent to Airbnb's morning announcements.

Airbnb is trying to move into the mainstream. If Airbnb wants to enter the hoteling business, then it needs to be regulated, taxed and subject to the same safety compliances and oversight that law-abiding hotel companies adhere to each and every day.

"Over the years the types of properties on the platform have become increasingly diverse, from treehouses to boutique hotels", Airbnb wrote.
