Eurosceptic MPs pile pressure on UK's premier over Brexit

Eurosceptic MPs pile pressure on UK's premier over Brexit

The letter, organised by the European Research Group of euroskeptic Tories, is a potentially destabilizing development at a highly sensitive time for May's Brexit preparations.

Prime Minister Theresa May is facing a potentially risky outcry from 62 members of her own party who are demanding a quick, clean break from the European Union, just as she tries to finalize her Brexit plans.

The letter says that Britain "must have the ability to change British laws and rules once we leave, rather than being a "rule taker" without any substantive say in whatever Brussels decides".

That the United Kingdom has "full regulatory autonomy" and isn't constrained by European Union rules after-Brexit - which would be a possible outcome if the government successfully pushes for a close relationship with the organisation.

They sent a letter to the Prime Minister with "suggestions" about the divorce settlement ahead of a "Brexit War Cabinet" meeting and in the midst of a set of speeches by senior ministers.

And they demand the United Kingdom be "free to start its own trade negotiations" from day one of the transition period.

'The UK should negotiate as an equal partner.

"Ministers may not want or be able to accept the UK's timing and mandates as fixed, and should be able to set out alternative terms including, for example, building an agreement based on our World Trade Organisation membership instead", they wrote.

Responding, Labour MP Chris Leslie said on behalf of the pro-EU group Open Britain: "The ERG have long felt they can dictate Government policy and they are brazenly advocating the hardest of hard Brexits". "ERG clearly think they have the prime minister as their hostage", said MP Nicky Morgan, an advocate for a soft Brexit.

'She is too weak to face down the fanatics in her own party and to deliver a final deal that protects jobs and the economy'.

The UK wants a mechanism to object to new European legislation introduced during the implementation phase.

The government is seeking a transition deal after that date which will see the United Kingdom bound by the rules of the European Union for a period of around two years but without having any say in setting the rules that binds the 28-nation body.
