Mitt Romney announces US Senate run in Utah

Mitt Romney announces US Senate run in Utah

Romney, who also posted a video clip of his announcement, is running for a seat now held by Republican Orrin Hatch, who in early January announced his retirement against the urgings of Trump.

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will be on a ballot again as he made official his run for a soon-to-be vacant Senate seat in Utah. "Utah's economic and political success is a model for our nation; I am ready to fight for this great state and advocate for solutions that improve the lives of Utahns".

For his part, Mr. Trump has said Romney "choked like a dog" in his failed presidential bids in 2012 and four years earlier, when Romney lost the GOP nomination to Arizona Sen.

Mr Romney, 70, will be the heavy favourite for the Senate seat being opened by senator Orrin Hatch's retirement. Last year, less than a month after President Donald Trump took office, he stole the show with a speech that denounced the new president's refusal to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Romney began his foray into the national spotlight in 1999 as the president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics, successfully capturing for Utah the coveted games for the first time. A majority of Utahans belong to the Mormon faith. Hatch is one of Trump's most loyal supporters in the GOP, whereas Romney was one of his harshest Republican critics during the 2016 election. "No donor, no corporation will own my campaign or bias my vote".

'And let me put it very plainly, ' he said in March 2016. Romney is a devout Mormon, and there's a good chance that he'll play up his faith when he's trying to get into Washington; however, a reference to his Mormonism was noticeably absent from his campaign announcement. "I urged him to run because I think he is a once-in-a-generation public servant, and I have no doubt he'll represent our state and interests well".

The path to victory is expected to be a clear one for Romney, who is considered a sure bet to replace Hatch.

In another rebuke to Romney this week, Rob Anderson, the chairman of the Utah Republican Party, bluntly told the Salt Lake Tribune that he believed Romney's entry was preventing candidates who would be a better fit for Utah from entering the race. Early polling of the 2018 race has Romney sitting around 64 percent compared to likely Democratic nominee Jenny Wilson's 19 percent.

Romney originally signaled his intent to announce a Senate bid this Thursday in a tweet on February 1.

Friends of both Romney and McCain say Romney's willingness to jump back into the political arena provides them with another high-profile antagonist to Trump's America-first worldview. "Utah families deserve a Utahn as their senator, not a MA governor who thinks of our state as his vacation home".
