Fox, ESPN battling to sign Peyton Manning to a broadcasting deal

Fox, ESPN battling to sign Peyton Manning to a broadcasting deal

If Manning lands with ESPN, he could be a prime candidate to replace Jon Gruden on Monday Night Football. But the sports giant is going to face stiff competition from FOX, which now has the rights to "Thursday Night Football" in addition to Sunday afternoon games.

Peyton Manning has yet to say anything publicly about whether or not he is considering a career in television broadcasting in the near future, but it has become quite clear that he could have nearly any job he wants in that field.

Manning's decision to possibly enter the TV booth remains an intriguing storyline and he would be the top choice for both networks, sources told the New York Post on Friday.

According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, a source said ESPN is willing to "back up the truck' for the five-time MVP". Gruden was reportedly the highest-paid ESPN employee, making more than $6.5 million before leaving for a 10-year, $100 million coaching deal with the Raiders.

And that's exactly why ESPN is prepared to shovel money at Manning.

As the report indicates, this does not necessarily mean that Manning will sign with either network and the Post report also references Manning's stated desire to move into a front office role with potential ownership ties.

A person with knowledge of Manning's thinking said the fact that Fox's Thursday games would not take him away on weekends could work to the network's advantage. There was a feeling that McDonough lacked chemistry with Gruden, plus National Football League officials have not been fans of some of McDonough's critiques on officiating, among other topics.

Prior to last season, FOX reached out to Manning with the idea of either an in-studio or booth job on the table.
