Trump Urges Lawmakers to Make Deal on Immigration Reform

Trump Urges Lawmakers to Make Deal on Immigration Reform

Senators will begin rolling out proposals they'd like to see become law Monday.

Last month, Senate Democrats, bitter over what they described as Republican recalcitrance on immigration, declined to vote on an urgent spending package as an act of protest, resulting in a three-day government shutdown.

The bill talks of possibly legalizing almost 1.8 million "Dreamers" or recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, DACA, program, in exchange for some of the biggest enforcement changes in two decades. If Congress doesn't come up with an agreement to preserve the program, the administration has said, it doesn't expect to extend the March 5 deadline for DACA protections to expire.

Lawmakers today will begin tackling the thorny issue of immigration debate with an unusual, open debate in the Senate aimed at addressing the fate of young "Dreamer" immigrants as well as boosting border security.

The 49 Democrats in the Senate are hoping to find 11 Republicans willing to join them on a DACA proposal, but even offering significant amounts of money for a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border hasn't moved enough Republicans.

But in his statement, he hinted that some of the more conservative proposals that have come along to fit more in line with what Trump has requested won't do, and that keeping family-based migration intact was important-though he said he still wants a bipartisan solution.

Early Tuesday, Trump signaled that he is keeping close tabs on the debate to permanently replace the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that he is ending on March 5. "We would love to get it done", he said. "Whether they can stay in school, whether they can keep their jobs, whether they'll be separated from their families-these are as gut-wrenching as decisions in life as anyone might face, and I just don't know if we'll have 60 votes".

The Senate is expected to officially start its immigration debate as soon as Tuesday, with senators from both parties expected to propose a wide array of proposals. But for those GOP lawmakers interested in much stronger enforcement of immigration law, the proposal being offered by Republican Senators has a lot of sweeteners. "Rather, this is the time for a narrow bill".

Sen. Chuck Schumer said immigration won't be easy during remarks at the McConnell Center in Louisville.

The immigration framework was pushed by President Trump, after the incident in which a drunk illegal killed Colts player, Edwin Jackson, in a vehicle accident.

Senior Republican lawmakers say Trump deserves credit for the totality of his immigration proposal.

Cornyn told reporters Tuesday.

He credited Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for tackling the bill with a bipartisan approach.

"The only enemy to this process is overreach", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. Trying to illegitimately attach DACA measures to budget discussions does nothing more than create a false divide between Americans, legal immigrant Americans and illegal immigrants. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is set to unveil his own plan.

The debate happening this week in the Senate comes after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., promised senators he would bring an immigration measure to the floor for debate if Congress was able to pass continuing resolutions in January and February to continue funding the government.

Under the judge's order, the government is required to continue processing DACA renewal requests for people who already are enrolled in the program and those whose enrollment lapsed before September 5, 2017.
