Chelsea bomber sentenced to rot away in prison

Chelsea bomber sentenced to rot away in prison

"I don't harbor hate towards anyone", Rahimi added at one point, "but through life experience, I have learned to understand why there's such frustration between the Muslim community overseas and the American people".

A New Jersey man accused of planting bombs in New York City and New Jersey and who was allegedly inspired by ISIS and al-Qaida was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday, according to NBC News. He also ordered $562,803 in restitution.

Rahimi set off a pressure cooker bomb the night of September 27, 2016, in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, shattering windows, launching a steel dumpster more than 100 feet in the air and sending people into a panic.

Like the bombs found the next day at a train station in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, however, this device was discovered before detonation.

Hours later at 8:30 p.m., Rahimi's main explosive - a pressure cooker filled with ball bearings - went off on 23rd St.in downtown Manhattan.

"Mr. Rahimi just stood here for the last 10 minutes and blamed everyone else for his actions", Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Crowley said.

"Less than a year-and-a-half after his attacks, Rahimi has now been tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison", said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman. "My father went to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on multiple occasions".

Given a chance to speak, Rahimi, shackled at the ankles, portrayed himself as a victim, saying he came to America as a 7-year-old boy with no hatred for anyone and was raised by a father in a household where there was no mention of what his father experienced during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. "You have no remorse".

In the trial, Ahmad Rahimi criticized the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which said that the father had not sufficiently informed them of Rahimi's interest in terrorist organizations.

"Rahimi's conviction and sentencing are victories for New York City and our nation in the fight against terror".

Rahami also allowed some inmates to view materials on his laptop or provided electronic copies as he spread The Book of Jihad, bomb-making instructions and various issues of a propaganda magazine, the court heard.

He urged a sentence not based on what people think terrorists might inspire or the fear they may cause.

"My father failed like the system failed him", Rahimi said.

Pauline Nelson, 48, of Brooklyn, stepped to the podium. "You have no remorse for what you did".
