Oxfam revelations lead to more accountability for charities

Oxfam revelations lead to more accountability for charities

"But I'm not apologising for the fact that Oxfam continued its work in Haiti".

"The horrific behaviour by some members of Oxfam staff in Haiti in 2011 is an example of a wider issue on which DFID is already taking action, both at home and with the global community via the United Nations".

Former Oxfam employees in Chad claimed staff held sex parties with prostitutes.

Oxfam has denied allegations that it tried to hide that some of its staff paid prostitutes in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

"I have so much respect for Oxfam, they do great work, but this is a sector wide problem", the former staffer told the Observer.

More reports of misconduct have emerged since the original report in the Times.

Oxfam said it was "dismayed by what happened" and would fully cooperate with authorities.

Sex workers were reportedly invited to the Oxfam team house on a number of occasions. A senior member of staff was said to have been fired for his behaviour in 2006.

There had been other incidents since 2011, he said, but "nothing on the scale of this severity".

Oxfam chief executive Mark Goldring apologised on Saturday, saying he was deeply ashamed of Oxfam's behaviour.

"Everybody, the 25,000 staff and volunteers are compromised by this". If any issues arise during recruitment processes - through DBS, references, whistleblowing or even a verbal comment - we would always investigate and take appropriate action.

Mr Goldring added: "There is not a single organisation in which there has not been sexual abuse and exploitation and Oxfam is certainly no worse than most other worldwide organisations and actually has tried in many ways to be better". The charity allowed staff members to resign from the organisation and seek new aid jobs elsewhere.

The married 68-year-old went on to become head of mission for Action Against Hunger who told MailOnline it had "no idea" about his background.

Penny Mordaunt, the Secretary of State for International Development, also accused Oxfam of a failure of "moral leadership'".

Mordaunt, speaking to the BBC, said she was meeting Oxfam representatives on Monday.

Oxfam, one of the world's most prominent relief agencies, could lose its funding from the British government over reports that its workers exploited survivors of a massive quake in Haiti, and possibly other disasters, for sex.

"Sexual abuse is a blight on society and Oxfam is not immune", Thomson said.

She added: If they do not hand over all the information that they have from their investigation and subsequently to the relevant authorities including the Charity Commission and prosecuting authorities then I can not work with them any more as an aid delivery partner. Asked if that was a lie, Mordaunt said: "Well, quite".

Ms Mordaunt replied: "Well, quite".

"What is so disturbing about Oxfam is that when this was reported to them, they completely failed to do the right thing", she said.

The Cabinet minister announced she will meet with the British-based charity's leadership tomorrow as it continues to reel from accusations it covered up the episode in 2011.
