NASA just published the farthest-ever images taken in space

When the image was taken, the spacecraft was at a distance of 3.75 billion miles from Earth. About two hours later, New Horizons broke the record again with images of two Kuiper Belt objects.

The Voyager 1 spacecraft previously held the record for the image taken furthest out in space, after it took the famous "Pale Blue Dot" image 27 years ago.

Alan Stern, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute said, "New Horizons has always been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched". New Horizon's next target is a flyby through the Kuiper belt; hence, the latest images give an overview of what new destination of New Horizons.

FILE - This image made available by NASA on Friday, July 24, 2015 shows a combination of images captured by the New Horizons spacecraft with enhanced colors to show differences in the composition and texture of Pluto's surface.

Shots of these two icy objects were captured by NASA's New Horizons space probe. On January 1, 2019, the probe will fly by a small, frozen world in the Kuiper Belt called 2014 MU69, which orbits a billion miles beyond Pluto.

Before we eventually lose touch with New Horizons, it's hoped that it will tell us plenty more about the Kuiper Belt.

Launched in 2006, New Horizons spacecraft is created to explore worlds at the our solar system. The imager is one of seven instruments aboard the New Horizons spacecraft that reached Pluto in 2015. On Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, The Associated Press has found that stories circulating on the internet claiming Pluto has been officially reclassified as a planet are untrue.

Prior to New Horizons' star shot, the image taken farthest from Earth was one of the Blue Marble snapped by the Voyager 1 spacecraft on February 14, 1990. Now, the shuttle is currently on its way to study one or more other Kuiper belt objects.

New Horizons continues its journey into the cosmos at a rate of about 700,000 miles a day. It finished its primary mission with the Pluto flyby in 2015 and is now on an extended mission to explore the Kuiper Belt, helping the United States to complete its reconnaissance of our solar system. It plans to observe around two dozen objects in the belt, including dwarf planets and "Centaurs"-objects with unstable orbits that cross the orbits of the solar system's giant planets". Stern is the principal investigator of New Horizons mission. According to NASA, the spacecraft is in hibernation mode until June 4, when mission controllers will bring it back online to start preparing it for its visit with MU69.
