Hong Kong bus crash kills 18, injures 62

At least 18 people were killed and almost 50 more injured when a double-decker bus carrying spectators and workers from a horse-racing track crashed Saturday in Hong Kong, the BBC reports.

Police confirmed that at least 18 people people have died.

Reuters reported the roof of the bus was cut off to rescue passengers. I am also an editor for Turning Point News and a foreign correspondent for Snip.And in case you were wondering, it's supposed to be pronounced "Wit-2".

At least 17 men and two women were among those killed, the spokeswoman said. Among those, according to the Times, 15 were hospitalized in serious condition, and 10 were deemed critical.

The injured have been rushed to hospitals, while the site of the accident has been cordoned off. Senior police superintendent Li Chi-wai, of New Territories North, said the driver likely was "speeding when driving down a slope, lost control" and then "turned over on its left". People fell on one another and got tossed from side to side, ' he said.




He said the franchise bus company would pay $10,000 to each injured person and family of the deceased.

The accident is Hong Kong's deadliest bus crash since a 2003 crash that killed 21.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, she said.

An inquiry into the accident and the bus company's operation will be set up, Lam said.

While Hong Kong has a well-developed and generally safe public transportation system, fatal bus crashes have persisted.
