Phoenix Suns trade for Orlando Magic guard Elfrid Payton

Phoenix Suns trade for Orlando Magic guard Elfrid Payton

As first reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Suns will acquire Elfrid Payton from the Orlando Magic at the mere cost of a second round pick.

The question is, how will Payton fit in with Devin Booker and the Suns? The 23-year-old has made a major improvement in his 3-point shooting, reaching a 37.3 percent clip this season in limited attempts - an acumen that will prove helpful playing alongside this young Suns core.

The pick in question will be an extra 2018 second-rounder the Suns originally acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in the Troy Daniels trade, per Woj.

Payton was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 National Basketball Association draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Suns traded Eric Bledsoe to Milwaukee midseason and virtually only had Tyler Ulis as a point guard on the roster. He proceeded to start 63 of his 82 appearances during his rookie campaign en route to registering 8.9 points, 6.5 assists, 4.3 boards and 1.7 steals across 30.4 minutes per outing. Payton becomes a restricted free agent this summer, and if the Suns intend to keep him, they will need to make an offer or match competing offers in free agency.
