Sony Debuts First Teaser Trailer for 'Venom'

Sony Debuts First Teaser Trailer for 'Venom'

Details on the plot have been scarce, and we don't know how the movie will exist inside its own universe. Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock and Venom, a character who made his debut in Marvel comics in the mid-eighties and toes the line between villain and super hero. A deal between Sony and Marvel returned Spider-Man himself to the Marvel Cinematic Universe past year, but Sony is also trying to build a separate franchise around related characters like Venom, Silver Sable and Black Cat.

The Mad Max star plays Eddie Brock, who - as we see in the teaser - is dealing with a serious medical issue (if you can call it that). Brock doesn't appear as his alter ego Venom in the footage.

Will be interesting to see how Hardy wraps his tongue round this "protector" when the movie is released in October. So, not getting to see what Venom looks like (especially after the lackluster cinematic version in 2007's Spider-Man 3) is a bit of a letdown. "Now you're something else", he says.

With Black Panther coming up next week and Avengers: Infinity War not far behind it, you'd be forgiven if you forgot that Sony is working on a standalone movie starring Venom.

Co-starring Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate and Woody Harrelson, Venom should have more than enough star power to propel Venom to the sorts of superhero heights already achieved by many of his Marvel brethren. In Planet of the Symbiotes, earth is invaded by an army of symbiotes, aka the black, gooey alien substance that serves as the raw materials for Venom's iconic costume.

The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland fame and written by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle).
