Smart home unit 'Nest' is spun back into Google

Smart home unit 'Nest' is spun back into Google

The reason products such as Android TV and Google Home exist is because Google wants to be there, absorbing your banal chats about your favourite vehicle and that new bone broth your coworker's been drinking. It also plans to offer more bundled deals for Nest and Google home devices, and may integrate Google accounts into the Nest app. Its next product, Nest Hello, is a smart video doorbell that is scheduled for release in March.

Alphabet on Wednesday announced it will fold Nest into its Google hardware team, instead of operating the smart home device maker as a separate division like it has for two years.

This fits in line with the appearance of Nest on-stage at the October Made by Google event a year ago, talking about using Google's Machine Learning and Assistant in powering Nest products.

Google actually purchased the Next in the year 2014 and now they will start working together to build up the future hardware components.

Now, though, Google has announced that it will be consolidating its Nest and Google Hardware teams to work on smart home technology. Additionally, Nest created its "Works with Nest", which works with products from both Google Home and Amazon. Thankfully Google made the decision to combine the software teams of the two companies back in December 2016, which led to Android Things. "Being part of the Google family, we get closer to that". We've contacted Google and Nest for clarification and will update the article accordingly. Fawaz said that Nest has shipped around 11 million products since its founding in 2011.

In their joint announcement on the change, Google and Nest described the move and Nest more broadly as "an integral part of Google's big bet on hardware".

The move is created to combine its machine learning and AI investments with its hardware development, which the company says is a natural progression.

A united front could be helpful in competing with the other ubiquitous digital helpers of today - Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri. The move aims to make it easier for Google to add artificial intelligence software like Assistant into new Nest products.
