PS4 Update 5.50 Beta Brings Parental Controls To Limit Kids' Playtime

PS4 Update 5.50 Beta Brings Parental Controls To Limit Kids' Playtime

Sony has announced that the beta for the PlayStation 4's next major system software update 5.50 has begun rolling out today, which means you should probably check your email if you previously signed up to participate in the test.

Play Time Management is a new feature which will infuriate children as it allows parents to set limits on when and for how long each individual child can play for. Sony wrote, "If needed, the family manager/guardians can apply playtime restrictions to make sure that the child is only playing for a set amount of time or within set playable hours". Notifications on PS4 will be sent to the child during gameplay so that he or she knows when they should save and quit.

There's also the option to add extra game time an the choice to automatically log the child out of the PS4 once their allotted playtime is over.

The second tab, PS Plus, only lists games you've acquired through the monthly PlayStation Plus offerings. This will be helpful for items like betas or demos that you probably won't ever use again. Arguably the biggest overhauls added by System Software Update 5.50 are the changes made to the PS4's UI. You can import images from a USB device, and you'll even be able to make adjustments like crop, zoom and so on to fit the dashboard. With the 5.5 update, you can insert a flash drive that has the image you want, and set it as your background from the Themes tab in Settings.

Customize Tournaments Team Pages: It will now be possible to customize one's Tournaments team page with a team logo or background imported from a USB stick.

HDTV Supersampling for PS4 Pro.

For PS4 Pro gamers, the firm is adding a new "supersampling" mode, which boosts the visuals for gamers still operating on 1080p TVs.

PS4 Pro owners receive a new supersampling feature that will be of interest to those who have the system connected to a non-4K display.

Quick Menu Enhancements: This allows users to quickly access specific friends from their custom list. Now players can view their friends (and who is already online) in the Quick Menu. Speaking of tunes, the next firmware upgrade will allow players to listen to background music of their choice when streaming games through PlayStation Now. Xbox One added play limits a year ago with the Creators Update, and the One X hardware has been supersampling games since last November. You can also now permanently remove old notifications from the PS4 as well. "Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of PS4 Pro". First off: I'm sorry, but Sony still isn't going to let you change your PSN username, no matter how much it reminds you of how your tastes have changed since middle school.
