Kansas congressman among lawmakers to treat injured after train crash

Kansas congressman among lawmakers to treat injured after train crash

Pence said he was in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump when the news broke.

Rep. Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee was injured Wednesday morning when a train taking Republican members of Congress to a retreat hit a garbage truck in Virginia.

Remarkably, these sites claimed to have this highly sensitive trove of (conflicting, unsourced, unattributed) information hours before the lead investigative agency on the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board, had made any public comments about the collision.

We are so thankful for the first responders and local law enforcement for their professionalism and quick reaction today. Mike Lee of Utah.

"To look out the window and see the debris and the garbage truck, I knew there were probably people injured. We did try to resuscitate, but ultimately you had to realize it wasn't possible", Dunn said. "It took us maybe a quarter-mile to stop".

Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan was on the train but said he was not hurt. U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman of Hot Springs offered an update on Facebook, telling people: "I am on the train in Virginia. Members with medical training are assisting the drivers of the truck", Oregon Republican Greg Walden wrote on Twitter.

One person on the garbage truck died. Senator Jeff Flake said "I thought after that time I never want to experience a day like this again, and unfortunately it came too soon". He said they will be looking into the train's data for this answer.

"I know my two little kids would not have been sitting in their seats".

The crash was "loud and surprising", said Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky. "Everybody around us got thrown on the train auto". The part of the truck we can see was decimated. He expected another train will come and hook to the back of the train.

"It was a hard impact".

Several minor injuries were reported on the train, which carried about 100 GOP lawmakers. Minnesota Rep. Jason Lewis was evaluated for symptoms of a concussion.

Flake, Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, joined medical personnel in carrying one of the injured passengers to an ambulance. Flake and Wenstrup did nearly the same thing last summer in the shooting at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia. "Yesterday we lost an employee and a brother, his one year old son and mother of his child lost a father".

Hundreds of US lawmakers and some of their family members and staff were aboard the chartered Amtrak train the morning after President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, headed to a strategy retreat at the luxury Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, according to the Associated Press. The retreat runs through Friday, but Burgess said the accident was "unsettling to my family", and he was headed back to his home in Lewisville on Thursday to be with them.

The collision took place in Crozet, Virginia, about 125 miles southwest of Washington, tearing the truck in two, crumpling the nose of the locomotive and scattering trash alongside the tracks, according to media reports. "There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

Another Congressman was on his way to the restroom when the crash occurred, which threw him upon impact. Rep.

He said he was talking with colleagues about the coming retreat when he felt a jolt.

The lawmakers, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, were traveling with their families en route to a luxury resort in West Virginia for a three-day retreat.

"They were very insistent", Cole said. Earl Weener, a member of the board, has said that NTSB investigations can take considerable time to complete, and that the board would not make any speculations on the cause of the crash until further evidence was presented. They arrived at about 1:30 p.m.

"After consultation with leadership in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, the retreat will proceed with an adjusted program".

The members will continue to Greenbrier from Charlottesville via bus.

"Today's incident was a awful tragedy", the Wisconsin Republican tweeted later.

"Even before the emergency services got here, there were people off the train trying to administer first responder aid to those who were injured", Westerman said. The other passenger was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries. Buckingham Branch Railroad leases the tracks and is responsible for maintenance, signaling and traffic dispatching on the line. Not to mention the fact that in the moments right after the crash, "they weren't sure what else could be out there".

These are six recent, major incidents involving Amtrak trains, from Washington state to the Northeast.
