US Missile Interceptor Test in Hawaii Fails

US Missile Interceptor Test in Hawaii Fails

An SM-3 Block IIA was launched from Kauai Island in Hawaii using Aegis Ashore technology, a land-based variant of the Aegis ballistic missile defense system, but failed to hit a dummy projectile launched from an aircraft, Reuters quoted a US official as saying.

The increase in testing comes after North Korea ramped up its nuclear testing a year ago with six known missile launches - some of them over Japanese territory.

The official said test data is being analysed to determine why the interceptor did not hit the target.

Developed by defense contractor Raytheon Co, the missile that was used is meant to reduce the threat posed by intermediate range missiles.

Another SM-3 Block test in June failed after the interceptor missile's self-destruct mechanism was accidentally triggered by a member of military personnel, although there was a successful test in early 2017. The system "demonstrated the capability to defend the US homeland from a small number" of ICBMs launched "with simple countermeasures when the" USA employs "its full sensors/command and control architecture", Robert Behler said in a report to top Pentagon officials. The U.S. Missile Defense Agency did not comment on the outcome of the test but confirmed that one had taken place. The missile is created to intercept ballistic missiles.

The Pentagon has not publicly admitted the reported failure because of ongoing tensions with North Korea.

The second official who resigned in the wake of a mistaken missile alert is the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency's former executive director.

The launch was part of the Navy's Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex.

The secretive state, led by Kim Jong-un, have vowed to strike at the USA if they feel under threat.

The Pentagon succeeded in intercepting a target in the first test of the SM-3 Block IIA that took place in February of a year ago. "North Korea's reckless pursuit of nuclear missiles could very soon threaten our homeland", Trump said during the speech.
