Youth succumbs to injuries, toll rises to three

Youth succumbs to injuries, toll rises to three

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramaian Swamy on Wednesday raised a question on Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's silence over Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's decision to file an FIR against the army personnel for Shopian firing.

Earlier, two civilians were killed and nine others injured in the controversial incident, during which the army fired into a stone-pelting mob that targeted a military convoy.

However, a defence ministry spokesman said that Army opened fire in self defence after a mob pelted stones on their vehicles in which 7 personnel, including a officer, were injured.

Demanding that the FIR registered against the Army personnel be withdrawn, Pathania said already a magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident and let the law take its own course.

An Army convoy at Shopian's Ganowpora village was attacked on Saturday by a mob of 200 people.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had announced that the police would register a case against the army men involved in killing the youth.

The heat of the matter was the demand of BJP MLAs for dropping the Major's name from the FIR as it would undermine the integrity of armed forces.

Rayees Ahmad Ganie son of Mohd Yousf Ganie, 19, of Narpora, Shopian succumbed to injuries in the wee hours on Wednesday after battling for life for the last five days at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura. He said that the Army responded only after being "provoked to the ultimate".

Police had filed an FIR against a Major and some jawans on the same day and the cross-FIR was registered on January 28.

He said Indian army was considered one of the most disciplined forces in the world and has played a unique role across the globe on the United Nations call.

Following the incident, tension in the Kashmir valley escalated.

"The Army's version, eyewitness accounts and the statements of those who lost their near and dear ones would be included", Vaid said in a press conference. The written version has been added to the case file and will be part of further investigation into the incident.
