United States places Haniyeh on terrorist blacklist

United States places Haniyeh on terrorist blacklist

Before he stepped down, Alami was reportedly involved in ceasefire talks with Israel and was involved in the release of a captured Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, in 2011. "Hamas has been responsible for an estimated 17 American lives killed in terrorist attacks".

Israel's Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz tweeted in response: "I wish to congratulate the United States on the righteous decision to designate Ismail Haniyeh as a global terrorist".

"Today's actions are an important step in denying them the resources they need to plan and carry out their terrorist activities", he added, making the USA the first country besides Israel to designate Haniyeh as a terrorist. "Among other consequences, all of their property and interests in property subject to US jurisdiction are blocked, and USA persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them".

It was a failed attempt to keep pressure on the Palestinian armed resistance, Hamas spokesman in Gaza Hazem Qassem said in an emailed statement.

The State Department on Wednesday also blacklisted the Gaza-based militant group Harakat al-Sabireen and two Egyptian organizations: Liwa al-Thawra and HASM. "Today's actions are an important step in denying them the resources they need to plan and carry out their terrorist activities".

The other two groups-Liwa al-Thawra (Flag of the Revolution) and Harakat Sawa'd Misr (Arms of Egypt Movement, HASM)-are Egyptian, and some of the leadership in both groups was previously associated with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

"This decision will not deter us from continuing the resistance option to expel the occupation", it said in a statement. Iran also provides backing for the group.

Hamas officials on Wednesday slammed the US State Department's designation of Hamas Politburo chairman Ismail Haniyeh as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

US President Donald Trump declared in December 2017 that his administration would begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to Quds. Hamas leader had expressed their support for forces fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Born in a refugee camp in Gaza, the leader has always been seen as pragmatic and flexible in his attitudes towards Israel, and support for a Palestinian state alongside the Israeli one.

He said the announcement "crossed every red line" and called on Palestinians to resist it: "This Zionist policy supported by the U.S. can not be confronted unless we ignite a new intifada".
