Chiefs deal maligned QB Smith

Chiefs deal maligned QB Smith

There are issues beneath the issues-personal preferences, deep-seeded contractual minutiae, hidden motivations in upper management-that always seem to complicate what could be a simple transaction.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins agreed to a blockbuster trade Tuesday that will send veteran QB Alex Smith to Washington for a third-round pick and a player to be named later. It's hard to say, but perhaps the most likely option will be the one they could not complete at the trade deadline: Bengals backup AJ McCarron. While he had arguably the best season of his career, he may have played for a job next season.

Then came Donovan McNabb, who also showed up at 34, but flopped spectacularly in 2010. This means the Browns might not have to use the No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback.

It's yet another bold move at quarterback by Washington. Starting next season, Pederson and Smith will experience a new relationship - as division rivals. Smith will receive $71 million guaranteed.

Scot McCloughan: The ousted Washington general manager, who momentarily placed the franchise back on solid ground, gets to simply chuckle at his former employer on Twitter while the house burns down.

The reality is we won't be able to fairly assess this trade for Washington until we see how they perform with Smith as their quarterback. The Browns have extra draft picks and cap space, but they also have one win the past two seasons.

Looking at the graphic, with Alex Smith's numbers being on the left and Kirk Cousins' being on the right, according to past year at least, the Redskins and fantasy owners will be getting the same quarterback for all intents and purposes. The move could have an impact on the 2018 NFL Draft plans for the Indianapolis Colts.

A blockbuster trade occurred in the National Football League and it has major implications for many teams, whether they were directly involved or not. Ironically, he had a career year with 4,042 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, just five interceptions and a quarterback rating of 104.7.

The hosts had fun with Alex, but things got interesting when Dan Patrick told Smith his co-host McLovin "questions your arm strength". That appeals to coach Jay Gruden, whose offense favors dropback passers, but it's not confined to that style. So much of free agency is bluffing amid the unknown. And QBs Case Keenum, Sam Bradford and Teddy Bridgewater - all have made notable contributions to this team over the past three seasons, yet each comes with his own baggage - are headed into 2018 without contracts. Or he might always be what he was in Washington - good enough to keep the team in games and in the post-season race but not quite good enough to close the deal when a playoff spot finally was at stake.
