What Kalonzo's team was upto minutes before swearing in

Free- to-air TV stations across Kenya were shut down after they planned to broadcast live the unofficial swearing in of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Mr. Odinga was sworn in on Tuesday surrounded by some 10,000 supporters in Uhuru Park in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

The 73-year-old's mock inauguration came despite him losing a bid for the presidency in August last year, when Uhuru Kenyatta won an election that his opponent claims was plagued by fraud.

President Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term last November.

Kenya's attorney general in December said Odinga declaring himself president would be considered an act of high treason, an offense punishable by death. The Nasa leader said he would not read his speech, promising to give copies to the media as he was quickly shepherded out of Uhuru Park.

Odinga had explained to supporters at Uhuru Park, "Kalonzo Musyoka is not here with us".

The event which had been highly publicised by opposition leaders as an historic event in Kenya's politics, ended in an anti-climax after Raila's deputy Kalonzo Musyoka who had breathed fire in the morning skipped the event. The annulment resulted in several clashes between the rival factions, namely the supporters of Kenyatta and those of Odinga.

Herman Manyora, a Nairobi-based political analyst said the peaceful oath taking ceremony could herald a new beginning in Kenya's political rejuvenation.

Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, the Communications Authority switched off the country's top private television stations, without giving any information or a reason. The opposition claims hundreds were killed and accuses the government of suppressing reports of the true carnage while dumping body bags into mass graves.

They said they had on Monday held a lengthy meeting, where they had revisited the controversial presidential election of August 8 as well as the boycotted election of 26 October, the reform agenda and electoral justice.

The opposition chief further said what caused his co-principals to skip the event would be disclosed soon.

The Kenyan government on Tuesday declared the opposition's "National Resistance Movement" a criminal group, paving the way for potential arrests following the symbolic inauguration of the opposition leader.
