Macron at Davos: EU Must Strengthen to Compete with China

Macron at Davos: EU Must Strengthen to Compete with China

The man behind China's economic policy also took the stage at Davos on Wednesday, pledging to further open the country to the world in a direct echo of President Xi Jinping's speech at the forum a year ago.

Macron said in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that "more ambitious" EU countries must be able to move toward more European integration, even if other European countries don't want to join in.

"Globalization must make sense to people and improve their lives".

Emmanuel Macron also called on the WEF participants to harness the negative effects of globalization. The nations who are wealthy and can subsidize the costs associated with renewable energy are already working to make them more cost-effective.

Following a court decision to exclude the Venezuelan opposition from upcoming presidential elections in April, Macron denounced the "unacceptable authoritarian slide" of the oil-rich and once prosperous country.

Macron also said that the impact of individual European sanctions against Venezuelans linked to the Maduro regime had been "limited".

Now, however, with his reform agenda under way, "France is back - back at the core of Europe".

"On climate change, we're losing the battle", he said, adding that the world needs concrete action and results by 2020.

Expanding his theme, Macron regretted the lack of fiscal harmonisation in the with Ireland notably attracting foreign firms through ultra-competitive corporation tax. "At what point are we going to stop innovation?" he asked, noting the potential for unfettered tech companies to do substantial damage to social interests.

"We can not end up in a world with a cosmopolitan digital elite and an army of discontented workers", Gentiloni said.

The World Economic Forum's 48th Annual Meeting is taking place on January 23-26 in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.
