Oscars 2018: Not Too White, and a Little Less Male Dominated

Oscars 2018: Not Too White, and a Little Less Male Dominated

Lina Wertmuller, "Seven Beauties" (1976) - Italian director Lina Wertmuller made history as the first woman ever nominated for Best Director at the Oscars.

In regards to her nominations, Gerwig, who's also nominated for Best Original Screenplay and whose film, Lady Bird, is up for Best Picture, revealed to EW that she was ecstatic to hear the news.

Dee Reeswrote the screenplay for "Mudbound" alongside Virgil Williams, making her the first black woman in 45 years - and the second ever - to be nominated for best original screenplay.

Gerwig is the fifth woman in Oscars history to be nominated for Best Director. Bigelow, who eventually went on to win in 2008 for The Hurt Locker, remains the only woman to take home an award for the category in the show's 90 years. And, as Nicki Swift previously reported, Greta Gerwig snagged a nomination for Best Director, alongside fellow nominees Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out), Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread), and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water).

Australian actress Margot Robbie is nominated for her role in ‘I, Tonya’.

Greta Gerwig, right (with Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan), "Lady Bird".

James Franco won a Golden Globe for his performance in The Disaster Artist, but was shut out of the Oscar acting categories.

After the semi-autobiographical film written and directed by Gerwig was nominated Tuesday for five Oscars, the Sacramento-based Marquee Media made a decision to show its support with the latest in a series of pro-bono online digital ads celebrating Gerwig.

With Gerwig's nomination, it's possible that the director's branch, known to be dominated by older white males, heard Natalie Portman's quip at the Golden Globe Awards when announcing nominations for best director. However, Gerwig was the only woman with a realistic shot, given that the Academy tends to not get too excited about honoring crowd-pleasing superhero movies like "Wonder Woman". Many thought that McDonagh, who picked up a Director Guild of America nod, would land in this year's best director race. The National Board of Review and National Society of Film Critics also named her best director for her work on the film.

When "Lady Bird" received 5 Oscar nominations Tuesday morning, St. Francis High School in Sacramento had plenty to celebrate.

SNUB: The Big Sick for best picture Amazon also didn't crack the best picture category in 2018, with its hit box office comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani.
