Siege On Kabul Hotel Ends With At Least 5 Attackers Dead

Siege On Kabul Hotel Ends With At Least 5 Attackers Dead

The Venezuelan authorities have not yet commented on the case.

The siege started Saturday night after five Taliban suicide bombers stormed the six-storey luxury hotel overlooking the city.

The attack came despite a spate of renewed efforts to revive long-stalled peace talks between the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani, including reports of private meetings with Taliban emissaries.

KAZINFORM The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has issued a statement condemning the recent terrorist attack in the Afghan capital. "We are working with the law-enforcement agencies of Afghanistan to clarify the circumstances of this terrorist act". However people in the security system say the real figure is certainly above 30 and probably many more.

According to UNAMA, in claiming responsibility, the Taliban stated that five attackers entered the hotel to target Afghan officials and foreign nationals.

Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said the last attacker was killed Sunday afternoon, more than 12 hours after the attack began.

Former Jihadi leader Mohammad Akbari said the attack on the hotel had been an attack on human values, and that the brazen attacks by militants in the country shows the weakness of the Afghan government to the world.

An official for the Afghan government told Fox News bodies are still being discovered, and the final death toll may not be known for a while.

The attack unfolded nearly six years after Taliban insurgents launched a similar assault on the property, which is not part of the InterContinental chain of worldwide hotels.

In Herat in the west at least eight civilians were killed when a vehicle hit a Taliban-planted roadside mine, officials there said.

It was the second time that the 200-room hotel had been the site of carnage: In 2011, an attack by insurgents left 21 dead there. The Taliban has claimed credit for the attack. Among those killed was a tribal leader who served as the local police commander, he said.

The Local Uprising Forces operate under the Interior Ministry. There were also conflicting accounts of the number of attackers, which the ministry had put at six. It was initially reported that four gunmen had attacked the hotel.

"The attack is reported to be ongoing at this time".
