Microsoft launches new education PCs and apps from $189

Microsoft launches new education PCs and apps from $189

This week at the Bett show in London, Microsoft made its first education announcements for 2018.

Affordable laptops isn't the only thing that Microsoft is announcing today for schools.

Microsoft is taking on Google's Chromebooks and Apple's iPads in the education space through a new hardware partnership with Lenovo that aims to push Windows into the classroom.

The cheapest system, the Lenovo 100e, starts at US$189 (A$236) and features an Intel Celeron Apollo Lake processor, 2GB of memory, 32GB storage, and an 11.6 inch 1366 x 768 pixel screen that folds flat. Further new options come from JP, one of Microsoft's major device partners in emerging regions, priced from $199.

Mehdi gives Google credit where he believes credit is due: He says that Chromebooks didn't actually steal any marketshare away from Microsoft, per se; Google just discovered a previously-unmet demand for low-cost laptops and "made it affordable to have a computer in the classroom".

Microsoft will offer Windows 10 PCs to schools for as little as $189 (£135) as it looks to get its hardware and services in as many classrooms as possible.

Each of these new devices are spill resistant and ruggedized, and has been created to have have long battery life and 2x2 Wi-Fi for faster connectivity.

Microsoft is pushing augmented and virtual reality headsets as being a key tool for education, dropping the price for its Hololens headsets for academic institutions until the end of May this year. The company's also sweetening the pot a bit by tossing in Office 365 for Education free for teachers. It also revealed that, from March this year, Pearson will begin rolling out six new educational HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality applications.

Other changes to Office 365 to help students with a variety of demands, including special needs, such as new features for dictation, immersive reading, and support for new languages. The new Immersive Reader feature is coming to more Office apps and devices, including Word for Mac and iPhone, Outlook Desktop, OneNote for iPad and Mac.

Last year, Microsoft announced a new, bundled package of education tools and apps, designed in part to streamline the purchasing and management of its products for K-12 systems. Microsoft is also partnering with PBS and NASA to expand its Mixed Reality curriculum through the Bringing the Universe to America's Classrooms initiative. Powerpoint is being updated to allow teachers to record entire lessons so students can watch them later, and Teams has been rolled out to iOS and Android making it easy to keep track of learning and assignments regardless of the devices being used.
