Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza felled in Melbourne

Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza felled in Melbourne

Meanwhile, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic kept up their relentless march toward a semi-final meeting as Maria Sharapova suffered a crushing defeat by Kerber.

Left-hander Kerber has plummeted down the rankings to World No 16 on the back of a year of good old-fashioned poor form but has rallied with seven straight wins to start 2018.

This was Sharapova's first appearance at the Australian Open since 2016, when she tested positive for meldonium and later was handed a 15-month ban.

The 17th-seeded Keys, who lost in the U.S. Open final previous year to Sloane Stephens, saved three break points serving for the match, finally clinching it on her first match point when Bogdan netted a backhand.

"Expectations are different", this year, Federer said.

But the man to beat would no doubt have to be world number one Rafael Nadal.

The 24-year-old sent down 21 aces and 57 winners in the match and was broken three times in the opening set.

He was due to play Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round on Sunday afternoon.

The match was originally scheduled for Rod Laver Arena, but was moved to Margaret Court Arena due to a backlog of long matches at the larger venue.

On the women's side, apart from the two upsets mentioned above, grunting reared its ugly head during the first round clash between Ashleigh Barty and Aryna Sabalenka.

Hsieh will play 2016 Australian champion Angelique Kerber in the fourth round.

Radwanska hung in despite her injury, breaking back twice in the second set to 2-2 and 4-4.

U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys opened with four straight aces and won the first 11 games in a 6-0, 6-1 win over 92nd-ranked Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Germany's Angelique Kerber, the 2016 victor in Melbourne, delivered a superb performance to beat Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-3 in the third round.

Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei beat an ailing Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 7-5 in the third round.

After two comfortable wins the five-time major victor was growing in confidence, but she had no answers for Kerber, who is on a 12-match winning streak in a kind of comeback of her own after a sliding down the rankings a year ago.

Halep will play the victor of Saturday's later match between local hope Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka. "I think for sure they are much better than us mentally, so when we go on the court we forget who they are and focus on our game".

Hsieh and her partner Peng Shuai (彭帥) of China, seeded eighth in Melbourne, won their second-round match against Lesley Kerkhove of the Netherlands and Lidziya Marozava of Belarus 6-4, 6-1 in 67 minutes.

Grigor Dimitrov was pushed all the way in five sets before finally beating No. 186-ranked Mackenzie McDonald.
