Armed forces network will air AFC, NFC championship games

Armed forces network will air AFC, NFC championship games

With the federal government shutting down at midnight Saturday, there were a number of changes to the routine that men and women in the armed forces have grown accustomed to following.

The NFL will give troops free access to Sunday's conference title games at USO facilities.

National Football League spokesperson Brian McCarthy said that military members can watch the National Football League games for those who have access to USO Centers overseas.

Previous to this most recent update, Dana White, a chief Pentagon spokesperson, told CNN that "sports broadcasts are not considered an essential activity", thus calling for the suspension of the AFN.

It was not immediately known why AFN was taken off the air this year, when it remained intact during the 2013 shutdown.

The network posted a message online that said AFN services were not available, and classical music was playing on its radio and TV stations.

As Republicans and Democrats try to figure out a plan of action during the first full day of the United States federal government shutdown, one large segment of the government's employees face a unique, inconvenient issue. CBS Sports is reportedly carrying a live stream of the AFC Championship game.

The loss of programming coming on the weekend of the NFC and AFC football championship games, when the Super Bowl match up is decided.

By Sunday morning, McCarthy announced that the AFN would air the games after all. "I bet members of congress are gonna watch it", someone wrote on AFN Europe's Facebook page.

For those who have been in the armed services, life can be pretty miserable at times and the games are an invaluable way to rest and unwind.

But one thing that the Democrats can never be accused of is doing what is in the best interests of those who serve and who for some odd reason they seem to view as adversarial forces.
